Marta Domínguez breaks her silence

Marta_Domínguez

After several weeks of silence following the revelation that she was being investigated in the famous Operación Galgo, Marta Domínguez decided yesterday to break her silence in an interview with Pedro J. Ramírez on Veo7, an interview that at times felt more like an interrogation, but which allowed us to see again an athlete who was still surprised and hurt by the accusations and by the treatment she had received.

Marta Domínguez defended herself against the allegations against her by pointing to her more than ten years of career and the consistency of her performances, a consistency that rules out one of the most common indicators of doping, which is a sudden improvement in athletic performance. Likewise, she insisted that the Guardia Civil found nothing in her home apart from a few harmless everyday medications.

They were there for four hours searching. They went from room to room and found nothing of what they were looking for, which was prohibited substances and money. They left with a couple of computers and some medication of mine, the one I usually take. Later it was said on television that they had found all sorts of things in my home and I don’t know why

Throughout the interview she firmly denied having doped at any point in her career.

Since I’ve been competing there have been rules, and it has never occurred to me to dope. We are closely monitored 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, and you have to be available for any type of test for one hour a day

She likewise denied any involvement with the infamous Eufemiano Fuentes or having been implicated in Operación Puerto.

I have nothing to do with that investigation. During the years Operación Puerto took place, between 2004 and 2006, were the worst years of my career, and the evidence is there

Finally, when asked whether she felt mistreated in the country, the athlete acknowledged that after so many years of work defending the country’s colors she had felt disappointed, and in that she may well have reason to complain. In time, when the courts reveal the truth, we will be able to see whether Marta Domínguez broke the law, but in the meantime, perhaps we should remember the presumption of innocence to which she is entitled, if only just in case she is innocent.
