2017 British Open Golf: preview, schedule and TV coverage of the season's third 'major'
Sergio García, Jon Rahm, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Pablo Larrazábal are the Spanish participants in the tournament being played at Royal Birkdale Golf Club.
Golf fans have this week circled in red because the season’s third major arrives, the British Open. In its 146th edition, the tournament is held at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club, in Southport, where the coveted ‘Claret Jug’ will be on the line.
The tournament will be played from Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 July. The weather forecast predicts the possibility of rain and wind that will affect some tee times. During the week, rain is expected that could make the greens very receptive on this course, which tends to reward players who avoid mistakes when getting the ball from the tee to the green.
The best players in the world will gather at Royal Birkdale and, among them, the Spaniards Sergio García, Jon Rahm, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Pablo Larrazábal. Betting houses place García and Rahm in the top 5 of favourites, backed by their victories at the Masters of Augusta and the Irish Open, respectively. Rafa Cabrera Bello also arrives in excellent form after winning the Scottish Open last weekend, playing, in his own words, the best golf of his life.
The list of favourites is very long and includes players such as Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Adam Scott or Henrik Stenson, last year’s winner.
To follow the tournament on television in Spain, we once again have the option of Movistar+ Golf, which will devote most of its programming for the week to the British. Live coverage on all four days will air at these times:
- Thursday 20 July: from 7:30 a.m.
- Friday 21 July: from 7:30 a.m.
- Saturday 22 July: from 11:00 a.m.
- Sunday 23 July: from 10:00 a.m.
In addition, every night at 10:00 p.m. there will be a highlights show with the best moments of the day.
